Sojitz Corporation: Solar energy with Japanese technology

Sojitz Corporation is a Japanese company involved in a great variety of businesses around the world. It is active in diverse sectors such as the automotive industry, aerospace, medical infrastructure, energy, natural resources, chemicals, food resources, agricultural and forest resources, consumer goods, and industrial parks.

Sojitz Corporation is present in 50 countries and regions around the world. It arrived in Chile in 2017 to participate in the Huatacondo solar energy project located in the Atacama Desert. This project was developed together with the Japanese company, Shikoku Electric Power, and the French company, Eiffage.

In announcing its participation in the project, Sojitz Corporation indicated that it expected the demand for electricity in Chile to maintain steady growth in line with the development of the country’s economy. Sojitz Corporation stated: “The country is actively working to incorporate renewable energies into its energy mix, establishing a target of 70% of its electricity to come from renewable sources by 2050.”

Sojitz Corporation also highlighted that as a member of the OECD, Chile has “the transparent structures required for foreign investment.”

The Huatacondo project later became known as the S4 Solar Power Plant (“Parque S4 Solar Chile”) and was inaugurated in September 2019. With an investment of almost US$200 million, it has over 300,000 solar panels with an installed capacity of 103 MW, generating energy equivalent to the consumption requirements of 100,000 homes.
